This April, Sydney's premier racing event is happening, filled with food, fashion and plenty of action!

Want to mingle with Sydney’s rich and famous? Well you can at one of the highlights of the city’s social calendar, The Championships at Randwick Racecourse, taking place this April. From the decadent fashion to the exhilaration of the competition itself, this is an event like no other. And when you stay at The Macleay Hotel, you’ll be primely positioned to enjoy it to the fullest!

The Championships

Two exciting racing events are coming up in April. ‘The Championships’ are heralded as the grand finals of Australian racing and take place over two consecutive Saturdays. On April 1, the BMW Australian Derby and The Star Doncaster Mile will take place, with $2 and $3 million worth of prize money respectively up for grabs.

The following weekend, on Saturday April 8, the Longines Queen Elizabeth Stakes Day, with a whopping $4 million at stake, will be held.

The fashion

Let’s face it, the races is all about who’s wearing what. If you’re planning to go, grab your girlfriends and do some shopping beforehand and get your hands on a stylish dress and some decadent millinery.

Celebs will be there in abundance, decked out in their finest. Former Miss Universe Australia Jennifer Hawkins and supermodel Megan Gale are among those that regularly attend racing events. You’ll be surrounded by some of Australia’s most eminent fashion designers, too. Keep your eyes peeled for some Sass & Bide and Collette Dinnigan designs on the Aussie A-listers.

The food

There’ll be plenty of delicious food options at Royal Randwick. Those on a budget can still enjoy a gourmet experience, with delish bar platters and picnic hampers filled with mouth-watering king prawns, Sicilian chicken and sourdough rolls.

For those willing to splurge, award-winning eateries will participate in a fine dining experience known as Little Sydney. This year, China Doll, Catalina and Victor Churchill are the hatted restaurants serving up their cuisine.

The practicalities

Royal Randwick Racecourse is just over 5km away from The Macleay Hotel and easily accessible by public transport. Free shuttle buses will run on the day from Central station, which is only a short train ride away from Kings Cross. Regular city buses will also depart from the CBD to the venue.

Are you keen to check out all the food, fashion and racing action at Royal Randwick this April? Book a room at The Macleay Hotel and you’ll be perfectly located to make the most of a day at the races.
