Located at Bradleys Head Rd, Mosman NSW 2088, Australia, the Taronga Zoo is the city zoo of Sydney. Opened in 1916, the zoo is managed by the Taronga Conservation Society, which also carries out animal protection and breeding programs inside the zoo premises. A marine section in the name Great Southern Oceans were integrated to the zoo in 2008.
Taronga Zoo houses a large number of native Australian animals and exotic species. There are about 4000 animals in the zoo. In addition to this magnificent collection of wildlife, the Taronga Zoo also offers a spectacular view of the Sydney Harbor and its surroundings, including the Opera House and the Harbor Bridge.
The location of the zoo, which is along the waterfront, on an elevated land, provides a picture perfect view of the entire city. The most popular attractions in the zoo include a Bird Show, Gorilla Forest, Himalayan Mountains, Giant Tortoises, South American Aviaries, Wild Asia and the Seal Show. Here the visitors can feed the animals and take close photographs of them.
Taronga is open every day of the year, including Christmas Day, visiting hours being from 9.30AM-4.30PM. Tickets are priced at $46 for adults , $23 for children and family passes are sold at $124. You can also buy annual passes which would give you unlimited access right throughout the year.
Taronga Zoo is located about 11km away from the Macleay Hotel, however, getting there is quite easy. Catch a taxi near the hotel and ask the driver to take you to the zoo via the M1 route, and you can reach the Taronga Zoo within 25 minutes. Other route is via the Bradfield Highway, which would take about 30 minutes.
